Subconscious biases

The human subconscious is a scary place, full of ideas that many of us attempt to suppress and ignore.
Sometimes bits and pieces of the ideas can emerge at the most inopportune times.
Studies show people can be consciously committed to egalitarianism, and deliberately work to behave without prejudice, yet still possess hidden negative prejudices or stereotypes.

So even though we believe we see and treat people as equals, hidden biases influence our perceptions and actions.

Psychologists at Harvard, the University of Virginia and the University of Washington created “Project Implicit” to develop Hidden Bias Tests — called Implicit Association Tests, or IATs, in the academic world — to measure unconscious bias.

Drinking problems? – How to stop drinking

Drinking small amounts of alcohol can be a pleasant social activity for many people. Indeed drinking small quantities of alcohol can reduce the risk of heart disease for older people if it does not conflict with any medication being taken.

As the amount we drink and the number of times we drink increases, then so do the risks.

The risks to you: Raised blood pressure which increases the risk of Stroke; stomach disorders; depression and emotional disorders; cancers, particularly of the mouth, throat and gullet; hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver; malnutrition; accidents, at home, at work and on the roads; suicide.

The risks to your family: Violence, accidents (perhaps influenced by you); less to spend on food; poor role model for children; increased risk of divorce. If you are pregnant you can damage your baby by drinking alcohol.

Now I don’t want to be preachy, I just want to help those who have a problem with this.

Alcohol can give confidence. Alcohol can become a cheerleader when things don’t go too well. But after a while, it controls you.

Flag colors – psychological influences?

Each country has a flag. But do these flags mean something? Of course they do. Generally speaking, one can ascribe the meaning to certain symbols. For example, the Cross in the flags of Greece, the Scandinavian countries and British flags is a symbol of Christianity. Similarly, the Arabic writing on the flag of Saudi Arabia “There is no god but God, Mohammed is His Messenger” and “God is Great” on the flag of Iraq are also Islamic.

But that’s the meaning of flag designs. What about the flag colors? What do they mean? Can they influence the “behaviour” of a country (or it’s inhabitants)?

In the U.S. flag, white stands for purity and innocence. Red represents valor and hardiness, while blue signifies justice, perseverance, and vigilance.

I haven’t been to the U.S. to be able to tell if the americans are influenced by their flag colors, but the overall image the U.S has in the world fits the profile (ok, maybe without the purity and innocence part). The justice, perseverance, hardiness and vigilance apply to the international view of the U.S.

A 75-80% fit I would say…

Are the flag colours having any impact over a nation’s mentality? Is our behaviour influenced by our national flag colors?

I think that this influence exists. What do you think?

Feeling low on energy? No problem – Power Tips

I’ve found a very good article on how to quicly replenish your energy when you’re feeling under the weather. The original  27 tips on how to get a quick lift-up on energy levels were written by Ririan, from RirianProject.com.

The following 9 are giving the best results for me; for the full list be sure to visit his blog.

  1. Tea. I drink green tea all the time. It’s the best replacement for coffe, with amazing results. The antioxydants it contains will help you keep your young look for a longer time. It also is a quick energy booster. I recommend drinking it without sugar for maximum effects.
  2. Drink more water. A significant fraction of the human body is water. This body water is distributed in different compartments in the body. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water. Blood contains 83% water, body fat contains 25% water and bone has 22% water. Water is vital! You should drink at least 2 and 1/2 liters per day.
  3. Breathe correctly. Have a few moment daily for a correct, deep breathing exercise. A deep breath is relaxing and helps for a better body and brain oxygenation.
  4. Cold water is your friend. Splashing cold water on your face will make you feel more alive and alert.
  5. Take a short break. Just sit back and breathe deeply to relax yourself.
  6. Move and get your blood flowing. This increases the metabolic rate and stimulates the release of endorphins in your body. You will feel happier and healthier.
