According to a report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development which grades 34 member countries on 11 different happiness-measuring criteria, Turkey is the unhappiest country around. They’re doing extremely poor in the housing, community and income areas, the only thing its citizens are somewhat content with being their safety.
Following the Turks in their misery are Mexicans and Chileans. Mexico’s citizens are unhappy with their safety, education and incomes, while Chileans would love a better living environment and higher incomes.
At the top of the list, the top three happiest countries in the report are Australia, Canada and Sweden. The only aspect which the citizens of these three countries would love to see improve is (surprise, surprise) their income, but even so, their level of happiness with their current incomes is more than double that of the bottom three countries.
What I find surprising in this report is the large difference between Japan’s happiness index and that of France. I was expecting Japan to be part of the happier countries group, not bunched together so closely with the unhappier half.
