An unemployed 27-year-old German who created at least 150 jobs within Berlin’s police department has been arrested on Sunday following an investigation that lasted several months.
The man confessed to torching 67 luxury cars (BMWs, Mercedes and Audis) between June and August and said that on several occasions the fire had spread to other vehicles, raising the total number of burnt cars to 102.
This may seem like horrible behavior, but in burning those cars he stimulated the automobile industry and added a significant number of jobs to the police department.
Such was the extent of the problem this year, up to 500 police were deployed on the streets at night to look for suspects and a 150-member dedicated squad was set up.
How many new small business would you need to create 150 jobs? Quite a few. But this guy did it on his own, in record time.
On a serious note, though, he wasn’t right in the head:
“He wasn’t motivated by politics but rather social envy,” said senior police official Oliver Stepien. “He said in essence: ‘I’ve got debts, my life stinks and others with fancy cars are better off and they deserve this’.”
