Scared of your own shadow? Think spiders are terrifying? Don’t want to go through life unprotected? Buy an air conditioning unit from Florida’s United Electrical Systems – it comes with a shotgun!

The owners of the struggling electrical business are giving away Remington 870 shotguns in an attempt to boost their AC unit sales. I know it sounds like the worst giveaway ever, but it makes sense when you think about it. If the AC unit doesn’t keep a customer’s body cool enough during Florida’s hot summer days, a shotgun shot to the face will take care of that. Forever!

Ridiculous!!  It is no wonder America has so much gun violence!  This is similar to the bank in “Bowling for Columbine” that was giving away a free rifle with every account that was opened…

From a business point of view it probably won’t work either because I suspect the shotguns will cost more than the profit margin from the sale of an air-conditioner.

What irks me more than businesses giving away guns is the fact that gun are available in such large supplies in the first place. Reminds me of the movie “Lords of War” in which the production crew bought 3,000 real AK-47s because they were cheaper than prop guns (http://goo.gl/Tmpje).

Most violence is Handgun Violence, and it is done primarily with stolen or illegally purchased firearms with the sole intent of being used in crime.  The Remmington 870 is a pump shotgun, and is used primarily by police.  In the civilian sector it is used mostly for hunting and home defence.  There is no correlation between “Giveaway Guns” and actual gun voilence.  Bowling for Columbine” wasn’t terrible, but was honestly the beginning of the end of Michael Moore’s credibility.  And an 870 can cost as little as 700 dollars depending on style and state.  Before we get too carried away, remember than an armed public is the reason why we have an America in the first place.

So a production crew for a film purchased 3000 real firearms. So what? What’s your point? So what if they purchased 30000 of them. Good for them. I hope the finished movie met thier expectations.
Let’s look at swords for a moment shal we? Real swords are often used in films as well, and purchased in quantity. Again, so what?
Oh… they’re weapons with no other intended purpose but to kill people? Hey, that may be the opinion of some, but to many people swords just make nice wall hangers. Same thing with guns, in that many just buy them for hunting or target practice.
But even so, let’s just take a look at them for a moment as objects who’s primary function is to kill… This can be and has been done in self defence throughout history.
Sure, some dirt bag can get a hold of a weapon and use it for ill deeds (which is usually a stolen or black market weapon, in other words already illegal, and yes, statistics prove that undisputably), and of course this puts THEM in the wrong. This is, always has been, and should remain about personal responsibility. You don’t like the idea of some scumb bag out there having a weapon and feel threatened? Then get your own, learn how to use it, and keep it for self defense.
Call the cops if your being robbed at gun point? Wake up! Call them and while you’re at it order a pizza and then wait to see who arives first… that is if you’re still alive. Hey… we’re not talking about pumping your own gas vs having the gas station atendant doing it. We’re talking about your life and the lives of your loved ones. What’s that worth?
But let’s just take away the weapons factor for a moment shal we?
How many people die every year because of drunk drivers, road rage, and other morons behind the wheel?
And what do we do about that? Do we make all cars illegal because of it? No… we lock up those idiots and take away thier driving privlages, because the problem is with THEM, not the automotive industry.
Oh… That’s because cars are much more important than guns? Really?
Driving a motor vehicle is a privlage, not a right.
Defending ones life is a natural right, that every single animal on the planet is born with. You can’t take away that right either… declaw or defang an animal and you’ve simply hindered it’s ability to exersise that right, but it will still always have that right, even if it’s locked away in a cage for the rest of its life.
And so, it’s nice to see such promotions and gun give aways. In todays economy especially, since there are a great many people who can’t afford them.
