John Lewis, a UK retailer, released an innocent looking Christmas advert for 2010 that has sparked controversy with dog welfare charities and other dog lovers. That is because at one point in the ad a boy is shown hanging up a stocking for his dog on his outside kennel and then going back inside the house – leaving the dog out in the cold to guard the property (gasp!).

Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today, said she was “horrified” by the advert, while 1,400 people have joined a Facebook campaign against it.

Ms Cuddy said: “We are horrified by this. It glamorises neglect.”

Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, said it was “disappointed at the depiction of a dog kept alone in inadequate outside accommodation in harsh weather conditions, as part of a ‘feel-good’ Christmas campaign”.

Give me a fucking break. Not all dogs are indoor pussies that need to wear knitted socks, sweaters and drink hot honey lemon tea when it’s cold outside. Some of them are work dogs that actually guard properties and love their outdoor space. The dog in this ad is obviously not a fluffy house accessory that goes in a handbag – he’s a BAMF. And deerhounds (the breed of dog in the advert) love snow.

If you haven’t seen the advert yet, watch it below. If the dog scene outrages you, get a life.
