Sad day in trolling history.

An Australian guy by the name of Bradley Paul Hampson is the first person ever to be charged and convicted of Facebook trolling vandalism. Congratulations dude!

He was found guilty of “distributing and possessing child exploitation material” because he posted offensive pictures and messages on the Facebook tribute pages for two dead Australian children.

The pictures posted were of one of the victims with a penis drawn near their mouth, accompanied by messages saying “woot I’m dead,” “had it coming” and others which nobody dares mention (pussies).

Now, there’s no doubt that kind of trolling is very offensive, but… serving 12 months of  jail time for it? That seems every bit as extreme as the trolling he’s been found guilty of. In addition, throwing people in jail for posting offensive stuff online seems like a slippery slope to me. It offers some satisfaction to a small group of people while chipping away at the freedom of everyone else.
