In the village of La Verriere located on the outskirts of Paris, a family of 11 threw itself from a third-floor apartment to flee a man they mistook for the devil. In the process, a baby was killed and several more people seriously injured.

How did it all happen? A group of 13 people were watching TV in the apartment, among them being a completely naked man of African origin. The naked man heard the baby crying and got up to prepare a bottle. But when his wife saw him get up she screamed “it’s the devil! It’s the devil!.” (was he THAT black?)

In the confusion following the apparent case of mistaken identity, the naked man’s sister-in-law stabbed him in the hand, and he was ejected through the front door of the apartment. When he attempted to get back in, panic erupted.

“The other occupants of the flat fled by jumping out of the window,” Ms Faivre said. According to police, one man jumped with the two-year-old in his arms and crawled two blocks away to hide in bushes, screaming, “I had to defend myself.”

What takes the whole thing to a new level of stupidity is that they weren’t under the influence of hallucinogenic substances and no evidence that any occult ritual took place was found. Which means they were completely conscious and genuinely believed one of them was the devil.

Just how superstitious do people have to be to show such an insane level of ignorance?

    If his own wife didn’t recognize him, he must be. The benefit of it is that he won’t be needing any Halloween costume this year, he can just go out naked. If it’s dark nobody can see him, and if anyone does manage to see him they’ll just get the scare of their lives.
