In news that will make Mark Zuckerberg want to hide in a corner and cry dollar-shaped tears, Google’s newest attempt at social media has already reached 10 million users. And it gets better: the number is estimated to double by the weekend.

Quite the impressive figure considering that Google+ is only two weeks old and still in closed beta. Sure, 10-20 million doesn’t even come close to Facebook’s user base of 750 million, but then again it was never meant to at this stage.

What matters at this point is that Google+ maintains this viral growth rate to make it possible for early adopters to seriously use it, as opposed to just being an inactive part of it. Because what’s the point of a social network if it makes you feel as lonely as a neuron in Sarah Palin’s brain.

And with such a massive growth for Google’s social network, Mark Zuckerberg should be scared. Very, very scared. Google+’s growth is even more viral than Facebook’s was back in the day, and that is despite the fact that there’s already a massive player on the field. So if Zuckerberg is not careful, Facebook could be the new MySpace in just a few years. That, or Google+’s traction will wear off and it will turn into another Google Wave.
