Can I has space travel?

At Big Think, a global forum that includes interviews with experts, Stephen Hawking said we should abandon our planet and colonize others if we want to survive as a species.

His worries? Earth’s finite resources, man’s greed and the selfish and aggressive instincts we carry in our genes.

What I think he completely misses is that wherever we would go, we’d take the same behavior with us. And when we would know we can just f*ck up whatever planet we are on and then move on to another, I bet we would exploit it more than we’ve ever exploited Earth, leading to an outcome that would probably be worse than our current one.

Video (well, it’s audio with a static picture) of his thoughts below.

I just wouldn’t want to have to hear every every professor at Space College rant about the evils of “Interplanetary Imperialism”.

  • Huuuuh, No

Yeah, except that he didn’t say that. Look up “colonize”. See if it means “abandon”. Sheesh.

Regardless of how you choose to look at it, my point stands: we’ll do whatever we did here wherever we would go.
