That will never get stolen.
Just like in the case of computer hackers, offline thieves are also in it for the money (duh, right?). And when talking about cars, they usually make that money by reselling the car. What makes a vehicle attractive for thieves is of course the price of the model and the resale ease & value.
So if you’ve got a decent vehicle, how do you protect it? First thought is of course an expensive car alarm. And that might work sometimes.
But what’s equally good, or probably better, is an obvious detail.
The color of the car.
A car theft study found that pink cars (almost) never get stolen, while black and silver/grey cars get jacked all the time.
Differences in theft rates between cars in common and uncommon colour suggest that resale value is on the mind of car thieves. We find evidence that it is indeed the resale value rather than the fear of getting caught that is driving this difference. If the aversion to driving a car in an offbeat colour is not too high – or if someone actually enjoys it – then buying deterrence through an uncommon car colour may be at least as good a deal as buying deterrence through an expensive car security device.
And this is just one of the benefits of going against what’s popular.
