A Human Rights Watch team near Benghazi has discovered five dozen anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines near the road connecting Benghazi to Ajdabiya after one of their trucks accidentally drove over them. They say Gaddafi’s troops laid the mines after driving the rebels out of the area.
The hypocrisy is strong with this one, as in 2009 Gaddafi asked Britain and Italy for compensation for the mines they left behind during World War II.
For the rebel army, this makes things even worse than they already were. They’ve been constantly losing ground for the past few days and ever since Gaddafi’s forces changed tactics and started using jeeps and civilian cars instead of tanks, they lost much of the cover offered by Western airstrikes.
My hopes of seeing the rebel army survive the assault by Gaddafi’s forces are dwindling.
