The days when Apple could brag about their products being virus free and not needing any special protection might be over. And that, well, it makes me smile.
There was a time when Apple had a tiny market share compared to giant Microsoft. And their small share of the market, plus the fact that hackers are motivated by money and want to get access to the most amount of people (because that’s how the money is made), is the reason why Apple was safe from malware harm for a while – everyone was busy hacking Windows.
But that magical time, when pink unicorns jumped around in safe virtual fields, is probably over for Apple. What malware coders try to hack is the software that most people use to access the internet, and with the advent of mobile platforms, that software is often times made by, you guessed it – Apple.
Apple’s personal computer market share might still be in the single digits, but in the mobile field they are the second largest smartphone marker in the U.S., with RIM as the leader. Add to that the 2 million iPads sold in less than two months and you have an attractive market to exploit.
What is Apple doing about it? The usual, being quiet or denying there are any security issues. There might not be any current huge threats for iPhones and iPads, but with more hackers trying to exploit the iOS platform, it’s only a matter of time. Because everything is vulnerable.
