Things continue to look bleak in Japan’s nuclear crisis as the Japanese government has designated the 12-mile evacuation zone around the Fukushima nuclear plant an emergency area, making it against the law to be found inside/entering it.

The government is arranging brief visits allowing one member of each family living in the zone back into their houses for a two-hour period to pick up their belongings, but those caught entering the zone without permission could face fines up to $1,200 and possible detention of up to 30 days.

“The plant has not been stable,” said chief government spokesman Yukio Edano.

“We have been asking residents not to enter the area as there is a huge risk to their safety,” he said. “Unfortunately, there are still some people in the areas.”

“Today… we have decided to designate the area an emergency area based on disaster law.”

On one hand I’m glad they’re taking the safety of those people seriously, but on the other hand I can’t help but wonder if things are getting severely out of control and they don’t want anyone witnessing it.
