Sharif Elhelwa, VICE reporter, spotted an Al Qaeda flag on top of the Benghazi courthouse where the Libyan revolution got started. Naturally, he tried to snap some photos but as he was photographing the flag a guard approached him and said “Whomever speaks ill of this flag, we will cut off his tongue. I recommend that you don’t publish these. You will bring trouble to yourself.” He took the risk and published the photos anyway.
This Al Qaeda flag sighting comes not long after the head of the NTC (National Transitional Counsel) said Libya is an “Islamic state and sharia law is the source of all our laws.”
These two events, coupled with the fact that Muammar Gaddafi was caught alive, sodomized with a bayonet and then executed, cast a worrying light over Libya’s new leadership and its plans for the country’s future.
