The International Council on Security and Development interviewed 1000 Afghans living in the regions of Helmand and Kandahar, asking them if they know why foreign troops are in their country. 92% of the respondents had no idea.
The interview probably went like this:
“So you don’t know why NATO troops are here, killing your countrymen?”
“No.”
“OK. Are you aware of 9/11?”
“9/11? What is that?”
“September 11, 2001. Terrorists crashed 4 planes into buildings in the USA. That’s the reason the US Army is here.”
“OMG, are you serious?”
But what’s probably worse is that even fewer US citizens know why their troops are still there.
