The South Korean Yeonpyeong island, target of North Korean artillery fire.

I woke up all upbeat this morning only to read about North Korea exchanging artillery fire with their southern neighbor. Way to kill my buzz, Kim Jong-whoever.

This is a summary of what happened between N. Korea and S. Korea:

  • South Korea ran navy drills yesterday, despite the standard North Korean warnings not to.
  • 200 artillery shells fired by North Korea, most hit water.
  • South Korean President goes underground in a bunker and says “we’ll avoid a war.”
  • 80 artillery shells fired back by South Korea, all hit water (probably aimed at water).
  • South Korean President attempts contact of North Korea to “talk it out.” No response from North Korea.
  • South Korea deploys F-16 fighter jets to assess the situation on the island.
  • 1300 (1700?) people flee the island to Incheon for safety.

Aftermath:

  • 2 South Korean Marines were killed.
  • 17 Marines were injured.
  • Civilian deaths not clear.
  • 2 civilians were injured.
  • 60-80 houses burning.
  • Korean won falls 200 points, US dollar increases 40.
  • South Korea builds 200 pylons

Let’s hope this doesn’t escalate into a full scale war. /hides under bed
