Because he had nothing better to do during a flight, a graphic design expert began pondering the parallels between airplanes and slave ships. He noticed that the seating arrangements of the two are similar and wondered whether airplane designers were “unconsciously influenced” by slave ship seating layouts. In his words:
Ever notice how similar the seating plans of airplanes resemble the more horrific layout (yet efficient design of those slave ships)? Could airplane designers be unconsciously influenced by them?
Yes or no, it was prudent that the airplane designers to use chair icons instead of people icons, no?
Now, I don’t find his comparison offensive in any way, but I would expect anyone with at least two working brain cells to realize that the layouts of planes and slave ships are similar because they share a common goal: fitting as many people as possible into a limited space. Connecting the economic use of space to slavery is just plain silly.
Next up: airplane design resembles modern vibrators. Were airplane designers unconsciously influenced by vibrators?
