I promise I will.
Say you have a very complicated problem. Like, which college to attend, or which job offer to accept. How do you make the best decision?
A recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology says that if you’re trying to decide on one of the options immediately, using conscious thoughts, you’re doing it wrong. You will probably get a decent result, but it wouldn’t be the best choice you could have made. What do you have to do to achieve the best results then? Distract yourself for a few minutes with something else, or even better, sleep on it overnight and decide the next day.
Students were asked to choose the best models from four imaginary makes of car. Each had 12 different features but two had better road holding and fuel economy. After reading about each car, one group of students was asked to make an instant choice.
Another group carried out a second test which was designed to occupy their minds for five minutes before making their decision.
Volunteers in the second group were more likely to select the best car, the results showed.
And this is how your expert procrastination skills have been helping you all along, without you even knowing. It’s time to feel proud!
