Scotland’s South Lanarkshire Council has been scammed out of £102,000 (around US$161,000) of taxpayers’ money after African fraudsters posing as one of their suppliers sent them a letter on fake headed paper which claimed the company’s bank details had changed and asked officials to use a new account to pay their bill.

The council staff fell for it and paid them, after which they had to pay the real company the same amount, again.
