Look at this fat guy going nom nom on that cake.
The British National Health service believes general practitioners and other health professionals should tell people that they’re fat, rather than obese. The reasoning for that being the fact that it makes people take more personal responsibility for their weight problem.
And I couldn’t agree more. While some people might feel offended by being called “fat,” that is what they are… and calling it something else is nothing but avoiding the issue in a way. What’s the point in that?
“I think the term obese medicalises the state. It makes it a third person issue. I think we need to sometimes be more brutal and honest. You can be popular by saying the things people want to hear and in the NHS we too often do that when we should be spelling things out clearly.” – Professor Steve Field of the Royal College of GPs
We need more people calling things what they are, rather than treating them with gloves to make them seem less “offensive.” It’s that kind of direct brutality gets things done and solves problems. At least that’s what I think.
