Talking to you, South Fulton firefighters.

I never heard any bad news about firefighters, but this story is enough to drag them way down, close to where the police is.

A homeowner in Obion County, Tennessee, forgot to pay his yearly $75 fire protection fee and when his house caught fire, the fire department refused to lift a finger. They only showed up when the field of a neighbor who had paid the fee caught fire, but they would still provide no firefighting service for the ones who had their home on fire.

The owner of the burning house, Gene Cranick, did offer to pay the firefighters whatever it would take to put out the fire, but he was told it was too late for that.

So I wonder, what kind of asshole does it take to arrive at the scene of a fire with full gear and do nothing, while a family’s roof goes down in flames? Sure they applied the local policy by the book (no fee – no fire protection), but fuck, man… where’s the humanity? They could have just charged the man his yearly fee a hundred times, gotten more more money than they would have had if he actually paid his fee, and it would have been a win-win situation for everyone involved. But no, they decided to make an example out of them and make everyone lose.

What’s also appalling are the internet reactions of people saying the fire department did the right thing in not helping them. It’s pretty shocking how cruel, senseless and ignorant some people have become, all in the name of “doing things by the book.” I thought humanity had learned that the policy of everyone for himself doesn’t work that well, but I guess I was wrong. That, or we’re simply just devolving.

And if any of the firefighters involved happen to read this, I hope your houses burn down.

A news report of the incident is below.
