I’m not making this up. This year, on December 29, all 180,000 souls living on the island nation of Samoa are going to travel forward in time by one day.

The event will be made possible by a ginormous time machine the Samoan government in an attempt to boost the island’s economy. Yes, it’s just a change in the international dateline to make their business days fit those of their trading partners.

“While it’s Friday here [in Samoa], it’s Saturday in New Zealand and when we’re at church Sunday, they’re already conducting business in Sydney and Brisbane.”

This is actually the second time the Samoans mess around with time travel. In 1892 they went back in time one day and got to celebrate the 4th of July (US independence day) twice.

Samoa is a tiny island nation in the Pacific Ocean. American Samoa is about three hundred miles away. Samoa is planning on time-traveling in December. This time travel, however, won’t apply to American Samoa. The country hopes that by switching where it is on the international dateline, it will improve its economy. This hopefully will help the country not need a personal unsecured loan to survive.
