Safest year on record. Here, have a bonus!

Despite last year’s Deepwater Horizon explosion that killed 11 workers and resulted in a huge oil spill, Transocean Ltd. (the company owning the rig) paid its top executives beefy bonuses for achieving the “best year in safety performance in our company’s history.”

CEO Steve Newman received around $90,000 in safety bonuses for his fantastic performance in covering up facts improving company safety, raising his total bonuses for the year to $374,062. Not too shabby for being part of such a massive fuck-up.

The company said its bonuses were appropriate as a way to recognise its executives’ efforts in “significantly improving the company’s safety record” and implementing a new internal planning system.

Those efforts have “enabled the company to maintain its financial flexibility during a challenging period, while, at the same time, positioning the company for sustained growth in the future.”

Now I’m wondering. If last year was their safest year on record, what does their worst year look like?

PS: Next thing you know, Muammar Gaddafi will be awarded the Nobel Peace prize for being a strong supporter of peaceful transitions of power.
