The people still working to contain the situation at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant are, without a doubt, heroes. They’ve had to deal with everything from explosions to dangerous spikes in radiation, and yet they’re still going in, every day, to try and restart the cooling systems and get things under control. They do so knowing full well the incredibly high risks of doing it.

If you’re curious what they’re getting paid for their efforts, a former plant worker said subcontractors to companies connected to the plant have been offered 80,000 to 100,000 yen a day to join the operation ($960 to $1200).
Pretty good money, but I wouldn’t call it a “huge sum” as The Independent did. Not saying the two are the same, but there have been reports of Gaddhafi paying African mercenaries $300 to $2,000 a day and their worst case scenario is a bullet to the head while the worst case scenario for the Fukushima “samurai” is a slow, agonizing, painful experience.
Hope they can get things under control soon or else we’re all gonna die (no we’re not).
