In more messed up news, a study conducted by U.S. government medical researches between 1946-1948 intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala with gonorrhea and syphilis, without their knowledge or permission. And it doesn’t stop there. Many of those infected were actually encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the experiment.
What was the aim of the study? To determine whether the antibiotic penicillin could prevent early syphilis infection, not just cure it. But the experiments never provided any useful information and the records were hidden, making the whole thing just a fucked up failed medical study.
And now, like the good moral people they are, U.S. officials are saying “oops, we’re sorry about that.” Apologies, after more than 60 years. Can’t get any cheaper than that.
PS: The similarity between this and the Nazi medical experiments is pretty scary.
